The Question of Faith: How to Listen to Higher Guidance

Faith is a journey—a quiet, often subtle practice of learning to listen, to tune in, to trust something greater than ourselves. It has been a guiding force in my life, shaping my path and illuminating the unseen. I have also witnessed what happens when faith is abandoned—how we, as small and fragile beings, are left to navigate this immense world without an anchor.

Faith is not necessarily about organized religion, though it can be if that is what speaks to you. It is about the soul’s journey. When we turn away from our soul’s wisdom, we inevitably get swept up by other gods—the gods of society, the ones that lure us with promises of validation and security. Perhaps it’s the god of social media, the god of beauty, the god of money, or the endless pursuit of external success. These distractions can make us believe that peace exists somewhere outside of us, just beyond our reach. So we keep running, searching, striving, only to find that the finish line never arrives.

At some point, though, we begin to realize: this isn’t working. We’ve been looking in the wrong direction. And in that realization, we start to turn inward. We begin seeking answers not in the external world but in the quiet spaces within ourselves.

This is where we often meet practices like prayer or meditation—not as a means of fixing ourselves but as a way of receiving. It is about listening, softening, and attuning ourselves to something greater. And yet, this process is unfamiliar to many of us. We have been conditioned to believe that softness, vulnerability, and sensitivity are weaknesses. But they are not. They are part of the whole, the balance between doing and being, between pushing forward and allowing space.

I want to invite you to explore this deeper listening.

Below are a few sensitivity prompts—gentle invitations to connect with something you might not ordinarily notice. These prompts can be small nudges toward refining the inner ear of faith, towards discovering that place within us that is receptive and open.

Because faith is, at its core, a receptivity. It is the trust that there is an energy, a wisdom, an order beyond what we can fully comprehend—but one that we can feel. And when we tap into it, even for a moment, there is a sense of wholeness. A peace. A knowing. And the moment we disconnect from it, we feel the shift—anxiety, restlessness, despair.

Through years of sitting with people, of witnessing their struggles and triumphs, I have come to believe that our emotions—joy, sadness, excitement, anxiety—are signals. They guide us. Anxiety, for example, is often a sign that we are moving in the wrong direction, a whisper from the soul urging us to pause and recalibrate. Joy, on the other hand, signals alignment. It’s a nod from our deeper self saying, "Yes, this way." But too often, we override these messages. We push through exhaustion, ignore our intuition, and convince ourselves that the only way to be worthy is to do more, achieve more, prove more.

What if we stopped? What if, instead of overriding our body’s wisdom, we honored it? What if we listened when it said, "Rest now" or "This doesn’t feel right" or “Go for it!!” ? What if we trusted that our deepest knowing is guiding us home?

The truth is, we live in a world that does not support this kind of attunement. We are not encouraged to sit in stillness, to feel the vibration of a tree, to listen to the quiet hum of life around us. But great warriors, those who moved through the world with strength and wisdom, were deeply attuned. They don’t strategize their every move; they feel the world around them. They respond to its rhythms, its shifts, its unspoken truths.

We have lost this connection, but we can reclaim it. Our bodies are not just vessels we drag through the day—they are homes of intuition. They hold the key to our deepest wisdom. And yet, we ignore them, pushing past their signals until something breaks down.

But it does not have to be this way. If we listen with grace, we begin to rewrite our lives. We begin to shift from seeking answers outside of ourselves to trusting the wisdom within. This is faith. It is not about being given answers but being guided toward our own truth.

A good teacher does not hand over solutions but instead illuminates the path so that we may find our own way. Your journey will not look like mine, but the process of discovering it—the listening, the softening, the trusting—is universal.

Together let’s turn inward instead of outward.

Let’s tune in instead of tapping out. You can do it right now.

Try this:

Find a gazing point—something alive, something with energy.

Allow yourself to settle into this space. Feel your breath, your stillness, the weight of your body resting into the present moment.

Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, let go. Notice what this space brings up for you. A sensation, an emotion, a whisper of guidance.

Now close your eyes. Drop into the center of your heart. Observe. Let go of trying, of doing. Simply be.

And from this place, ask: What energy would serve me today? What does my deepest wisdom whisper?

Listen. Trust. Let it fill you.

This is the journey of faith. This is the practice of deep listening. And it is available to you, always.
