The Spiritual Essence of Money
Money is such a complicated, deeply personal topic, and if you’re anything like me, it’s probably been a rollercoaster of experiences and emotions.
For me, my relationship with money has never been straightforward. It’s tangled in belief systems, self-worth, and societal narratives about who has money, who doesn’t, and what that means about a person’s value or happiness. We’re constantly surrounded by unspoken ideas that people with money are more deserving or happier, while those without money are somehow lacking. These stories run deep, and they impact how we live, spend, save, and even view ourselves.
In my course on The Spiritual Essence of Money we unravel those beliefs and explore the spiritual essence of money, and redefine what it means. Here are a few of the foundational action steps to begin shifting your mindset around money.
1. Identify Your Two Words
Take a moment to pause, sit quietly, and close your eyes. Think about money. What are the first two words that come to mind?
These words might reflect your feelings—like fear, freedom, stress, or security—or perhaps a belief you’ve carried about money. Don’t overthink it; just notice what surfaces naturally.
Write those words down. They’re not set in stone, but they’ll give you a starting point for understanding your relationship with money. As we go through this journey, those words might change or evolve, and that’s part of the process.
The goal here isn’t judgment but awareness. When you identify the emotions or beliefs tied to money, you take the first step toward transforming your relationship with it.
2. Reflect on Your Money Story
Every one of us carries a money story—beliefs formed in childhood that often influence how we feel and behave around money as adults.
Take some time to reflect:
What were the spoken or unspoken messages about money in your family?
How do these messages show up in your life today?
Do you associate money with safety, freedom, stress, or even self-worth?
For example, you might realize that growing up, money was equated with security, so now you feel constant pressure to save. Or maybe scarcity was a theme, leaving you anxious about spending even when you have enough.
This reflection isn’t about assigning blame or judgment. It’s about understanding where your money story comes from so you can decide whether it still serves you—or if it’s time to rewrite it.
3. Reframe Money as Energy
One of the most liberating shifts I’ve experienced was learning to see money not as a measure of my worth, but as energy—a neutral resource that flows in and out of my life.
Try this: Imagine money as a tool, neither good nor bad, but simply a way to create, grow, and serve. What would change if you approached money as a game rather than a source of fear?
Consider taking one small step this week to bring lightness and intention to your relationship with money. Maybe that means starting a gratitude list for the resources you already have, or brainstorming ways to use money to align with your values and purpose.
When you see money as energy, you begin to break free from the fear, shame, or attachment that often comes with it. Instead, it becomes a tool for freedom and creativity.
Continue peeling back the layers of our beliefs about money, uncovering deeper truths, and finding ways to live with greater freedom and peace—regardless of what’s in our bank account.
